Rhythm & Soul Series

C.M.O.N., New York, New York, 1996

Description

The purpose of this design is to communicate authenticity. Much of the audience for this series is the R&B/soul music aficionado who hasn’t heard this music since it was released on vinyl. The client asked us to use R&B street posters for the look of the series, which included over three decades of music. We wanted to take liberties with the type styles and graphic symbols to reflect each era of music, from the ’40s to the ’70s. Even the logo, of which there are three versions, did not have to be the same on each package. The collection is held together by its semblance of authenticity, its weathered effects, cheap printing quality, and naive design common in local posters and ads.
