Blackletter: Type and National Identity, which accompanied an exhibition at the Cooper Union’s Herb Lubalin Study Center for Design and Typography, is an exploration of the history and contemporary perceptions of blackletter typefaces. The collection of essays ranges from the formal qualities and nomenclature of the type to the contemporary stigma reflected in its aesthetics. The challenge in designing such a monograph was integrating the voluminous text, the supporting type specimens, and the detailed chronology of interrelated events into a comprehensive and legible presentation. Even more difficult a task, however, was measuring up to the scrutiny of a discriminating audience of typophiles.
