Food and Violence, December 1977, no. 70

Seymour Chwast, New York, New York, 1977

Description

Juxtaposing food and violence may have been inspired by scenes in The Godfather, but the appetizing relationship was digested even further in this issue. An excerpt from Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle chronicled brutal and unsanitary meatpacking conditions. Scher’s “Gastric Aggression” explained why gas-bloated Germany went to war, and “What Are You Eating,” a list of surprising food ingredients, predated America’s obsession with these concerns.
