Re-Cycle Bike Rack

Design Army, Washington, DC, Washington, District of Columbia, 2010

Description

Project brief: To create a bike rack for the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District that would be functional and artistic.

Approach: We had a completely blank slate to work with and only a small footprint to construct. DC has recently been removing parking meters and replacing them with ticket kiosks and smart meters that accept credit cards. We saw this as an opportunity to keep some of them around before they were all extinct.

Effectiveness: Result: the Re-Cycle bike rack can fit up to 10 bikes and is conveniently located in a “loading zone” that is between a set of active parking meters.

Juror Notes

Fun, provocative. Nice reuse of materials that have been discarded and outdated.
