Africa Comics

de.MO, Millbrook, New York, 2006

Description

de.MO was commissioned by The Studio Museum in Harlem to design a catalogue for the groundbreaking exhibition Africa Comics. Our design was inspired by modern comic books that are often sold in plastic bags. The most challenging as well as the most time-consuming process in completing this 288-page catalogue was the translation of the comics from their original languages into English. We purchased many comics fonts, customized them and replaced the text without altering the original art. The result surpassed expectations and is one of the best-selling catalogues the Museum has ever produced.

Juror Notes

“Nice contrast between rich and detailed subject matter and layout information; the breaks are paced really well. The typography and grid don’t compete with the content but complement it and elevate the art.”
