The photographer, Bruce Davidson, offered his book to The New York Times Magazine for excerpting. We chose a number of photographs for mood, heat and sheer pleasure. The image on the opening spread, a hand’s down favorite, conjures up childhood memories of summer watering holes for everyone who sees it. The typography, reflecting ideas about mirage, and the desert oasis, adds the subtlety of color to a black and white spread.
