Yes: Yoko Ono is a comprehensive scholarly study of Yoko Ono’s work from the 1950s to the present. The challenge for the jacket was to capture a sense of her conceptual and visual body of work. We took inspiration from photographs of early events, and Yoko Ono and the Japan Society suggested this 1971 Iain Macmillan image that captures the spirit of her direct and contemplative work. We originally imagined an opalescent background, but the printer helped us find a metallized paper that added reflection to the photograph’s glow. Ono’s favorite colors are blue, white and black, in keeping with her cool and minimal aesthetic. The blue duotone in combination with the cloud endpapers and flaps reference skies that appear in such works as Sky Machine, a vending machine that conceptually dispensed pieces of sky as indicated by a card.
