“History in the Making” construction fence

Chermayeff & Geismar, Inc., New York, New York, 2001

Description

“History in the Making” was a public history exhibition in the form of a construction barricade. Our client wanted to disguise some necessary building work and encourage lease renewals. We proposed to do both by unearthing the distinctive history of the building’s little-known Turtle Bay neighborhood. The result was a collision of the practical and the literary—the only construction fence we know of with a bibliography. The audience was comprised of tenants, passersby, cab-passengers, drivers, neighbors and the public in general. The exhibition was free and open to public view 24 hours a day for about 6 months.

Juror Notes

“This takes a structure most people never look at and really does something with it. Sets a great example for other developers and neighborhoods.”
