Templin Brink Design, San Francisco, California, 1999

Description

The graphic language we developed for this collection is rooted in the simplicity we found in materials created by the army in the 1930s and ’40s. We tried to remain true to how “undesigned” those materials look by only using one or two typefaces, little color and real simple lock-ups. We used industrial materials like sheet metal for the jacket tags, heavy duty chip board for the pant tags, industrial rubber bands for the belts and even K-Ration-like bags to package the T-shirts. Even the printing techniques got no fancier than silk screening and crude letterpress printing.
