Description

Juror Notes

'40s nostalgia, and very nicely done. . . quite accurate, too,
right down to the gold tone montage that recalls the
yearbooks that used to be published in the movie industry
in the Glamor Era of the late 1930's and early 1940's. In this
poster the double-track psychology of the nostalgia
parody—i.e., how to be happy but still hip—comes out even
more clearly. The images are so happy and appealing that
it's baffling to try to figure out what the ironic (equals hip)
caption means. . . "Goodbye to All That" ... Is this an
anti-smoking broadside? I don't know. It creates such a
warm, happy, appealing feeling. . . makes me want to light
up the roundest, firmest, most fully packed and totally
unfiltered cigarette ever made and take a drag down to my
kneecaps as I watch Joan Bennett's reflection in the
mirrored facade of her fireplace (above the Art Deco
andirons and fluffed white llama rug). Perhaps the real
meaning is "Hello, Alan Peckolick," which is O.K. with me,
because I like what he's done.
