End of I

End of I

McSweeney’s Publishing, San Francisco, California, 2006

Description

In 2002, McSweeney’s published I., a novel by Stephen Dixon. The cover, designed by Elizabeth Kairys and Dave Eggers, featured a die-cut “I,” which revealed a Dan Clowes illustration on the first page. For this book, the sequel, we wanted to build upon and invert that design: the Clowes art is now silkscreened directly on the cover; the maroon from the earlier cover has receded to the interior; and the die-cut “I” is slipping off the right edge.

Juror Notes

“Love the combination of Daniel Clomes’ illustration with absurd cutout counter-balanced with a very simple, understated type design inside.”
