Peter Seitz: Designing a Life

Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 2007

Description

This book celebrates the pioneering work and contributions of Peter Seitz, a Minneapolis-based graphic designer from the 1960s through the 1990s. The book serves as a historical account of Seitz’s influence on the tradition of modern design in Minneapolis and of his impact upon generations of designers during his 30 years as a professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

The written portion of the book includes an interview with Seitz, two in-depth essays and a chronology, which all help to give context to the work shown in the book. The plates represent Seitz’s academic projects from the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm (HfG Ulm) and Yale University, his timeless design for the Walker Art Center, and his professional work in the many studios he founded, including InterDesign Inc.

This publication serves as a model for chronicling the grassroots histories of modern graphic design in the United States. Documenting the work and history of graphic designers like Seitz, who were so influential in the formation and maturation of the field, is a means of preserving traditions and of promoting the value of design.
