Philip Taaffe

Mucca Design, New York, New York, 2010

Description

Project brief: The Philip Taaffe exhibition featured a collection of elaborate works on paper with a psychedelic streak.

Approach: Our design for the sumptuous hardbound catalogue included a cloth cover, multiple paper stocks and gatefolds showcasing details of the intricate works. For the cover, we conceived a half jacket that unfolds to become a poster, allowing us to print an entire drawing at actual size.

Effectiveness: We consider the design a success because it effectively and beautifully presents an old product in a fresh, eye-catching way while still referencing the series’ history. The client was pleased that the book was simple and elegant but striking at the same time.

Juror Notes

Exceptional typography, deftly handled. The colorful belly band (which unwraps to a poster) is a nice juxtaposition to the starkly stamped cloth cover.
