Golden Tree, Seoul, Korea, 2009

Description

F1984T2008 was published on the occasion of the RISD Korea Alumni Annual Exhibition of 2009. This book examines the relationship between privacy and technology: the design (technology) is crafted to systematically reveal all of the book’s contents (private matter). There are five techniques: mapping, targeting, detecting, scanning and tracking. The book is composed of six sections (or districts) ranging from A to F. Each section has its own pointer and a section marker similar to a map combined with numbers based on the content. Additionally, all of the photos and illustrations are laid out according to X and Y coordinates of this book’s map. Through the pointers, section markers and numbers, readers become aware of where they are, what they are reading and how each section is correlated. This system is reflective of the editor-designer’s thoughts and inquiry about this subject and relationship.

Juror Notes

The crosshair rules that structure every spread over the art and photography, the table of contents on the cover and the simple black-and-white on a toothy, uncoated cream stock—all give this book an unconventional and modern sensibility that is both edgy and unfussy.
