Environmental Graphics for Recreational Equipment, Inc.

The Leonhardt Group, Corbin Design, Seattle, Washington, 1996

Description

The signage for REI’s new flagship store was created to help their customers locate the new store and find their way through the 80,000-square-foot space. The Leonhardt Group and Michigan-based Corbin Design created environmental graphics that reflect the Co-Op’s values of efficiency, utility, and spirit. We created “green” design, using materials such as sandstone, wood, and oxidized metal. Both design firms worked closely with Mithun Partners, the architects, to create a space that was consistent and easy to navigate. The signage facilitates an understanding of the store layout, but also an understanding of REI’s ethics and commitment to preserving the environment.
