Bloomberg L.P.

Pentagram Design, New York, New York, 2005

Description

Pentagram designed signage, environmental graphics and media installations for the new corporate headquarters of Bloomberg, the financial news, data and analytics provider. Working with the project architects, we developed an interior that would seamlessly communicate Bloomberg’s product brand and services—data, news and information—to employees, clients and visitors. This environment of numbers includes identification signage for floors, rooms and elevators; directory signage and wayfinding; and several dynamic, superscale media installations that display live content from Bloomberg’s own news and data feeds. We created a digital media distribution system for easy content management of the information displays. The numbers are extracted from Bloomberg’s live news feeds: markets, news, weather and sports. For the screen type we developed a font called Bloomberg, merging the letters of the font Avenir with the numerals of Avant Garde. In the numbers, an Avant Garde “o” was used instead of a zero, to create the impression of Bloomberg-branded data. The information is contextualized by various backgrounds: green and red communicate rising and falling stocks, respectively; black on white indicates news; weather reports are backed by images of sun or clouds.

Juror Notes

Highly inventive way of displaying conventional information. Because it’s unconventional, you look at misapplication of signage, whereas you wouldn’t if it were standard signage.
Great design; the way the signage lights up the building at night is great.
