IBM ThinkPad TransNote-Getting Started guide

IBM, Durham, North Carolina, 2000

Description

Because the TransNote was a new and innovative computer, we wanted the guide to be a departure from typical supporting documentation. The guide ships installed on the writing side of the computer, so we adapted to these physical constraints by creating a publication that was longer than letter size and bound at the top like a writing tablet. The illustration style is soft and sketchy, reminiscent of hand drawn notes and sketches. To orient the user to specific areas of the computer, we created a system that paired a “mini-map” of the overall system with detailed blowups of highlighted areas. The piece was pulled together with a primarily black cover with a quote from Paul Rand, the father of IBM design, and a gloss varnish of the IBM logo “super graphic.” Green was used as a secondary color for the cover and throughout the guide to provide highlighting and callouts.
