In & Out of Amsterdam: Travels in Conceptual Art, 1960-1976

Mevis & Van Deursen, Amsterdam, Holland, 2009

Description

During the 1960s and 1970s, Amsterdam was a nexus of intense art activity and fostered a dynamic cross-pollination of ideas and influences between artists of different nationalities. This catalogue, published to accompany an eponymous exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art presents more than 120 works—including works on paper, installations, films, photographs and ephemera—by 10 European and American artists who were part of this remarkable creative culture. Through richly illustrated critical essays and sections on each artist that includes a brief interview or short introduction to give context to the works that follow, this publication explores how conceptual art and travel operated interchangeably during this brief period of time, and highlights the unprecedented role that prints, bulletins, posters, mail art, artists’ books and other ephemera played in the artists’ discourse. The graphic cover treatment reflects the spirit of creative exchange and travels that influenced the works by the artists represented in the book.

Juror Notes

A simple, striking cover. A truly inspired color choice with gorgeous typography. Makes use of modernist tropes while making them look fresh.
