Tsunami: A Document of Devastation

de.MO, Millbrook, New York, 2005

Description

Tsunami is a document bearing witness to one of the most unprecedented natural catastrophes of our time. The disaster’s enormity dictated the large-scale format of the project, which attempts to capture, in two-dimensional form, the devastation’s sweeping magnitude.

This project is a document – a message in a bottle to be kept as a unique record. It was produced in the month following the December 2004 Tsunami. With proceeds going to Doctors of the World, Tsunami is a non-profit initiative not only to help the people most affected, but also to raise awareness about the suffering of countless people worldwide.

Juror Notes

Social Relevance Award: A powerful and moving presentation of tsunami damage. The oversize format is equal to the devastation shown, and unbound pages add to the sense of urgency—Look at this Now! I’m relieved that the temptation to turn these photos into an overproduced coffee-table book has been resisted.
