Cars Anthology “Just What I Needed”

Cars Anthology “Just What I Needed

MCA Records, Universal City, California, 1996

Description

This is my favorite of my later Rhino packages. I was finally able to express my obsession with all things automotive in a CD package. David Robinson (the band member responsible for a lot of the great earlier Cars’ covers) worked with me to develop the concept. We loved the idea of doing a metalflake surface with pinstriping but had no idea how we were going to manufacture it. We had little time and our regular vendors didn’t want to print on the sparkle-bright material. With the help of Brian Schuman of Rhino’s production department, we located a small local company that was able to do it. The end result is a seven-color silkscreen with transparent and opaque inks.

As with all things hot rod, this piece was a collaborative effort. Steve Stanford (one of the top automotive illustrators), did the pinstriping on the cover. Fellow art director John Bade lent me his first “daily driver” for the car detail photos on the inside of the booklet and the steelies on the disk belong to Robert Williams’ three-window ’32 coupe.
