The challenge was to design the new book by Francine Prose, whose last book of fiction was nominated for the National Book Award. The approach was to re-create a “Big Book” look, without its stodginess.
The book narrates the story of a young neo-Nazi, with Waffen SS tattoos under his shirt sleeves, who turns his life around by going to work for a human-rights foundation headed by a charismatic Holocaust survivor. The tattoos are the only physical link between these two strangers. On the jacket, blackletter and typographic ornaments were superimposed on a photo to create these tattoos.
