The painting referred to in this book is of the locale of the story. It was an obvious choice to show it in some way, but the challenge was to relate it to the story’s main character. The main character is an Orthodox Jewish woman who has many children but yearns for more from life. She reads, and this seemed like the natural way to show both things. The image was made on the scanner so the color is very saturated and warm. The type relates to the caption that might appear under the plate of an old illustrated book.
