Henry Mitchell, the gardening expert and essayist, was no refined dilettante. He had no fear of dirtying his hands and could be earthy in his writing style as well. For reality’s sake, I borrowed the gardening gloves of a friend who is a hardworking gardener, Andy Hughes, to get the masculine spirit across. They were scanned as they were, with dirt and grass fresh from his weekend efforts.
