The Unknown City is a scholarly book about the forgotten generation of working-class urban America. The design nearly fizzled when Elizabeth had to switch photographs mid-job because of permission difficulties. She managed to find another with exactly the same fissure to accommodate the type and still succeed thematically. For a nanosecond, editorial felt that the new photo looked too much like Wall Street; fortunately, good design prevailed. The typography has this amazing interaction with the photo. If the title were in Russian, you would still get it.
