Description

Over sixty years ago, the photographer Walker Evans proposed to photograph various collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art “in such a way that all atmosphere of scholarship, art history, aesthetic theory and analysis, cultural explanation, and academic tabulation is absent; so that the pictures are presented solely for the excitement and surprise these things carry in themselves.” In recording and presenting this extraordinary collection of American folk art sculpture, we have attempted to capture that same spirit, employing specially photographed, highly detailed images, an unusually large format, and the best-quality platemaking, paper, and printing technology to create a virtual museum visit, and to demonstrate convincingly that folk art can indeed be art.
