All on Fire is the National Book Award Finalist in Nonfiction for the biography of William Lloyd Garrison, a great political agitator and abolitionist. For thirty-five years, Garrison edited and published The Liberator, an influential weekly abolitionist newspaper. His innovative use of various typefaces, point sizes, rules, and ornaments to draw attention to his message had a lasting influence on graphic design, even to this day.
My urgent headline approach for the book jacket reflects that period of newspaper design through the use of distressed type, treatment of art, and choice of paper stock.
