(1977) The Book Show: Paperbacks

Description

Smile in a Mad Dog’s I was our first book. It is a book of illustrations with captions by an award-winning California artist, Richard Stine. It is a difficult book to classify: is it, after all, a cartoon book/philosophy book/poetry book/art book? We still don’t know! The first printing was 9,000 copies. Our second printing was 10,000 copies. Our major concerns were cost and quality. We felt that $3.95 was the limit that the market would bear, yet we had to have heavy and opaque stock, which costs more. We made a satisfactory compromise.
