This was a book by a first-time author, so it needed a mass, genderless appeal. I also wanted to make a statement with the design in marketing the book. I picked up on the main character’s obsession with words and her love of this dictionary in her father’s library. There were many rejected solutions, but this one seemed to answer and skirt a lot of issues in selling this book. Ultimately, we wanted a package that people would want to pick up—even if they didn’t know why.
