The most challenging portion of this job was to create an interesting pacing that would allow a more organic flow of objects based on conceptual, formal and material decisions. The visual complexity of the design acts as a glue bringing together material of various levels and qualities, creating a unique language reflective of the energy particular to each region of the country. The flow of the book grows from not only a visual understanding of the images, but from a conceptual engagement of what they represent. The overall system we created to integrate images and typography was an evolving structure that changed as the book progressed and new elements were introduced into the mix. The underlying grid creates a kind of play with the surface elements and grows and becomes visible by the intersecting of images and graphics.
