It was a challenge to get across the spirit of Savion Glover’s approach to his art form to a young audience while holding its interest. I reflected this by developing a fairly traditional editorial/book format (with a bit of a twist here and there) and inserting large-scale elements throughout the book that serve to animate the page or provide a place to rest.
It became necessary to create a visual vocabulary to communicate Glover’s particular creative process, which entails a collaboration with others in a sort of “scat” dialogue, as he sounds out various taps or “hits” to the floor. This is reflected in the typography through an emphasis in type size, weight and color.
