Since 1994, Paula Scher has been designing colorful typographic posters in the tradition of old-fashioned English theater announcements for this festival. “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Tartuffe” are the NYSF’s 1999 productions. Winking at news headlines in the Age of Monica, the poster singles out the words “lust,” “shrew” and “tart” in a degraded fluorescent red. “Lust! in Central Park” also needles Mayor Rudolph Guiliani’s vision of a smut-free New York. (At the time the poster was made, Giuliani was conducting a crackdown on anything sex-related in New York City.)
