Bite Hard is a collection of poetry by Malaysian-born spoken-word artist Justin Chin, whose work explores stereotypes of race, desire, and loss, and is laced with pop-culture references. In approaching this cover, I collected icons representing stereotypical Asian culture, and by digitally juxtaposing the elements, created a literal depiction of biting as well as spoken word becoming printed word. I value Bite Hard for its simple visual pun, and for the way I was able to work with the publisher with regard to the unconventional title placement, which we believe conveys the stark flavor of Chin’s poetry.
