From the Center: Design Process at SCI-Arc, a 224-page compendium of projects by fifty-two of SCI-Arc’s faculty, documents the design thinking or process behind a variety of built and theoretical projects. The work includes an art museum website, a Beverly Hills dentist’s office, a Sioux university, Swiss propeller factory renovation, a daycare center at a Metro stop, clothing boutiques, residences, restaurants, and urban design schemes for Havana and North Hollywood. The simulated chipboard paper cover slips off to reveal the actual chipboard cover underneath, with its hieroglyphic printed spine. Concealed spiral binding completes the feel of a working sketchbook. The cover design integrates the two-dimensional moving hand, an icon designed for the school’s twenty-fifth anniversary materials, with a softly illusionistic geometric space.
