This book was almost entirely dense, somewhat technical text, with only a handful of illustrations scattered across almost 300 pages, so the main challenge was coming up with an attractive and clear type page that organized the material (which was quite diverse) in an accessible manner. To do this, I put the most technical information —the physical description of the books—in the outer margins, leaving the main text block for the author, title, and interesting running commentary. Frontmatter and backmatter are always a challenge to the designer, and this book—with its two indices, dedication, copious notes, and other ancillary materials—presented myriad opportunities for diverse typographic treatment. The author, Randy Weinstein, worked closely with me on all aspects of the design. The binding design took some convincing, but he also provided much useful input that helped the appearance of this publication.
