The primary purpose of this book is to document a site-specific artwork. Artist Merrill Wagner painted a record of the shadows cast on a group of boulders over a one-year period. The book includes over one hundred photos of this cluster of rocks from all directions at all hours in all seasons. Because many more people will see the book than will see the artwork, the role of the book design is to be a messenger for the artist’s ideas. Part of the design challenge was to hold the reader’s interest long enough to allow them the pleasure of discovering subtle changes in the midst of apparent repetition.
