The poster was intended to inform members of the call for entries to the society’s annual show. Because I was the first woman ever to illustrate the poster, the designer, D. J. Stout, and I felt we wanted to depict an “illustrated” woman, with the tattoos describing various necessary elements (such as the logo and the number 39), along with some more ambiguous ones. Above all, we wanted to make a strong, striking image that would work on a number of levels.
