This catalogue posed dozens of the usual challenges, including developing a grid that would work for all elements, finding the appropriate typographic treatment for each level of information and maintaining the proper relationships between the various pieces. After reading the materials, I looked for a form that could treat disparate entries (size of image, length of text, etc.) equally and attractively. The two most important influences on the design were budget (hence the one color interior) and the curator (through her text, conversations and review of layout proposals). The book is fairly close to the original concept and presentation. The major change is a more conservative presentation of the images. Originally we proposed pages using small reproductions and occasional enlarged details or silhouettes for each entry. A combination of curator comments and space limitations led us to our final design.
