In a novel of race and class, a lone African-American confronts the inevitable tensions of attending an all-white boarding school. The close up cropping of the boy’s face on the jacket creates an uncomfortable tension, while engaging the reader with piercing eyes. The type moves back and forth over the white line running down the center of the jacket, echoing the moving race lines of the novel. Moreover, the boy is literally being framed by white and a black-and-white color bar, continuing the race theme.
