Description

We had to design a 48-page exhibition catalogue featuring 14 artists’ works, including an essay/interview with the curator, artists’ biographies, a checklist and front matter. The challenge was to integrate the disparate parts into a unified whole, and to create a flow avoiding creating many little separate chunks of information.

We designed a system whereby the spreads of artists’ plates and bios could be interwoven with the essay/interview. This allowed the curator’s perspective and voice to accompany one’s viewing of the work. The unifying size of the transparencies created a natural parallel between the various artists while the formal grid structure became a scaffold upon which positive and negative space defined discrete areas of information. Minimal use of a hairline rule also helped articulate boundaries.
