I was asked by Dave Eggers to design and produce miniature books for the 826 Valencia pirate-supply store, which is a project of McSweeney’s Publishing in San Francisco. I aimed to design a high-end, handmade object at once lavish, mysterious and informative, appealing to art lovers, pirate aficionados and book collectors. (“For the person who has everything: a very small book about glass eyes.”) The pages of each book were offset-printed on one letter-sized piece of paper. Aside from the printing, every aspect of the project was completed by hand. The illustrations were done with ballpoint pen. As the trim sizes were so tiny, the entire edition of 50 could be bound using samples of Japanese book cloth.
