The 1000 Journal Project is an attempt to follow 1,000 blank journals as they travel from hand to hand around the world. People who find them add stories and drawings before passing them along in an ongoing collaborative art form. The experiment consists of 1,000 physical journals and a website that ties them together. Participants use the site to report on a journal’s location and post scans of what was in it. The largest hurdle to overcome is keeping the journals moving and tracked. Different cover designs and instruction sets address this with varying levels of success. The project as a whole is continually evolving. We’ve had such a huge response from people who want to participate that the website needed to change. Instead of just displaying the artwork and journal info, it’s turned into the primary interface between those who have journals and those who want them.
