Description

The challenge of designing this book was to present the artist’s artwork in the most direct way possible. The artist is very demanding regarding the reproduction of his work, so the printing had to be of the highest quality. The artwork speaks for itself, so the typography and other graphic elements are very spare. The captions are limited to the title and year the work was made. Even on the cover, the only type is on the spine. To indicate the mysterious character of the photos inside the book, a detail of one of the artworks was enlarged and used for the jacket. The inside of the jacket was printed rather than the outside, to lend an ephemeral air to the image.

Juror Notes

“Sugimoto’s ephemeral pictures are perfectly ‘quoted’ in the diaphanous vellum cover.” Jack Woody

“Printing on the reverse side of the vellum works to further accentuate the essence of the photography.” Archie Ferguson
