Promotional CDs are sent to select radio programmers, retailers, press, and industry insiders to generate a buzz. For this release, Huey Lewis and the News made several cover recordings of early rock ’n’ roll standards. The company wanted the special package to hold a seven-inch vinyl and a CD. We also wanted to create an evocative package that would present the music in the spirit of an era.
The production quality of the finished piece is superb, with its unusual variety of tactile and visual elements. The use of kraft paper, silk-screening, and vernacular typography as well as old-style binding lend an informed simplicity to the piece without kitsch—a perfect complement to the style of music it contains.
