The Smart RTK labeling system was designed as a way to clearly, consistently, and comprehensively identify the effects of accidental exposure to hazardous materials.
Since 1983, the federal government has had “right to know” laws that require hazardous materials to be identified. However, there is no standard for content or format. Other label systems are difficult to read and require extensive training to understand. Unfortunately, many users are not fully trained, are illiterate, or may not be familiar with all materials to which they are exposed.
Smart RTK labels use symbols and word augmentation to identify the level of hazard, protection required, route of entry, and target organs and systems that are affected. Purdue University tested the Smart RTK system and found the design to be superior to other systems based on: accuracy of response, speed of review, completeness, understandability, ease of use, and effectiveness.
