I’ve never thought of making books as a “business” but rather an unquenchable passion. I also think books design themselves here, and the text seems to be the client. Probably restrictions are in part determined by size of the small printing press here in the parlor of an old farmhouse. Illustration is based on friends whose work might be simpático. The whole bottom line is, this is a form of wonderful play. It is, in a way, above money, though sometimes the cost is serious—for instance the “casing in” part of the binding was done by Scott Kellar at a cost of $50 per book, but the book needed a professional cover and my skills as a binder are not that exacting.
“This book maker’s art, binding, papers, letterpress and artwork all emerge whole and complete in this volume.” Jack Woody
