Stoked: The Evolution of Action Sports is a limited-edition book that depicts a visual history of the world’s most exciting sports, from surfing and skateboarding to snowboarding and freestyle Moto X. Over three years, authors Daniel Stark and Claudia Lebenthal worked to create this book as extreme as the sports it covers, through large, dramatic photos, as well as special print techniques. Tattoos, stickers, collector’s cards and a rare six-frame lenticular cover immediately engage the reader. While seemingly gratuitous, these design elements are actually an integral part of each sport’s cultural expression. The editorial content seeks to appeal to athletes and nonathletes alike by mixing historically relevant moments alongside general content and diagrams. The customized Stoked logo sets the stage for the world of action sports, and section treatments mirror the energy and attitude of individual sports or photos. Stoked has successfully assembled these action sports as a cultural movement and sought to tell their stories via an aggressive side-by-side photo narrative.
“High-energy, high-style, large-scale design for high-danger sports. Lenticular cover captures spirit from the start; vibrant color and die-cut pages finish the story. A book for real fans of the X Games.”
