As the first fashion designer involved in professional sports, Alexander Julian was invited to design driving suits and pit crew uniforms for the Newman Haas Racing Team, owned by Carl Haas and Paul Newman. Julian's inspiration was Colours, his casual menswear collection, featuring his artful sense of color – using brilliant bands of red-violet and his signature teal – impeccable placement, and unconventional detail. He created a look that emphasized important sponsor names, yet unified the team as a whole. In addition to designing the driving and pit crew uniforms for Mario Andretti and Nigel Mansell, Julian has designed for the Charlotte Hornets, UNC's men's and women's basketball teams, and the Charlotte Knights baseball team and stadium.
