Glaser was a big fan of Franz Kafka’s novels and stories. “His was a convincing view of the world that I found compelling.” Philip Roth was also interested in East European prewar fiction generally and had written an essay on Kafka in particular. Glaser had done some designs for Roth’s book jackets through the years and asked him if he could republish the Kafka essay in this issue of the Push Pin Graphic. This is one of Glaser’s favorite issues, in part because the wash drawings shown in this facsimile, derived from photographs in his personal collection, “seem to be fresher and more spontaneous than much of my work of this period,” he says.
