Exhibition Invitation “Low Brow Gods: The Art of Boxing”

Exhibition Invitation “Low Brow Gods: The Art of Boxing”

Lowbrowgods.com, Berkeley, California, 1996

Description

This exhibition explored the cultural and social implications of the sport of boxing from 1860 to 1976 through paintings, drawings, newspaper photographs, posters, and film screenings. The invitation reflects the spirit and sensibility of the show’s curation—presenting artifacts of popular culture in the contrasting context of academia and high aesthetics. The designer pays homage to the historical “fight” posters featured in the exhibition, mixing ’50s magazine illustrations and the back of a Joe Louis press photo with faux wood type and letterpress printing.
