Stop The Plant is a grass-roots campaign to prevent the construction of a mammoth cement plant, pit and mine in New York’s Hudson Valley. Located on the east bank of the Hudson River, the proposed 1,800-acre complex will emit 20 million pounds of air pollutants every year. The plant’s monolithic stack—over 40 stories high, issuing a plume of smoke six miles long—would dominate a scenic area immortalized by Frederick Edwin Church and the Hudson River School. The local advocacy group Scenic Hudson and a coalition of like-minded environmental, preservation and concerned citizens‚ groups are sponsoring the campaign.

To build awareness, area resident Woody Pirtle has designed a poster that uses the stack as a powerful image of blight against the blue sky. The image has been adapted for cards for storefronts and front lawns, benefit and demonstration materials, and an art-print poster sold as a fundraiser for the group.
